PeckhamRemovals SE15

Peckham → Portugal

SE15 to Portugal

The furthest destination we serve by road, and the one where everything follows from a single fact: once the vehicle leaves, nobody is coming back for the rest of it.

Why Portugal, and who goes

A decade ago this was mostly retirement to the Algarve. Out of SE15 it is now mostly people in their twenties and thirties — remote workers, freelancers, couples who looked at what a Peckham one-bed costs to rent and what a Lisbon or Porto flat costs to live in.

Which means smaller, denser loads: fewer sofas, more equipment, records, instruments and bikes.

The drive, stated plainly

Out through Kent and across. The whole western length of France to Bordeaux. Into Spain at Irún, then almost the entire peninsula — Burgos, Valladolid, Salamanca — to the frontier at Vilar Formoso. From there west for Porto or south for Lisbon, the Alentejo and the Algarve.

It is a serious piece of driving with mandatory rest inside it, planned and priced as such.

NIF, then the certificate

The número de identificação fiscal comes first and underpins everything else. Then the address proof, the residency evidence, and the document that actually governs clearance: the certificado de bagagem, issued by the consulate covering your UK address before the goods travel.

That certificate is built directly from the inventory. Which is why, on this route, the inventory is written with more care than on any other — itemised, valued in Portuguese, checked by you, and matching exactly what will be on the vehicle.

Loading once

  • The inventory is complete before the vehicle arrives, not during
  • Anything undecided goes into store rather than onto the lorry "just in case"
  • Bikes, instruments and equipment are listed properly rather than as "sundries"
  • The certificate and the load agree, because one came from the other

At the far end

The Algarve is mostly straightforward. Lisbon and Porto are not: steep cobbled streets, tight corners and staircases narrower than anything in a Peckham conversion. A hoist through a window is a normal method there and needs establishing before departure.

Spain shares most of this drive if you are weighing the two.

Worth knowing

Peckham to Portugal, the long route explained

What is the first thing to do?

Get the NIF — the Portuguese tax number, through a fiscal representative or a consulate. Renting, buying, residency and customs all depend on it, and it is the usual reason a Portuguese move slips.

What is the certificado de bagagem?

The baggage certificate, issued by the Portuguese consulate covering your UK address before the goods travel. It records your household goods as used personal effects and it is built directly from the inventory we write while packing.

What if the certificate and the load do not match?

Clearance stops while somebody reconciles the two. It is the commonest Portuguese delay, it is a paperwork failure rather than a transport one, and an afternoon of care at this end prevents it.

How long is the drive?

The longest we run: out through Kent, the whole western length of France, into Spain at Irún, then across Iberia through Burgos, Valladolid and Salamanca to the border at Vilar Formoso. Statutory driver rest is built into the plan rather than squeezed around it.

Is a shared load available?

Yes, and on a route this long it is what most flat-sized loads from SE15 use. You pay for your share and accept a delivery window instead of a date.

What is Lisbon access like?

Alfama and Bairro Alto are steep, cobbled and narrow — genuinely harder than anything in Peckham. A hoist through a window is a normal method there, and it has to be established before the load leaves London.

Why does everyone say to store first?

Because a second trip on this route is effectively a second move. The inventory has to be complete and the household genuinely ready before the vehicle loads, and storage here is what makes that possible when the dates do not line up.

Apply for the NIF today. The load can wait here.

On this route the paperwork lead time is longer than the drive. Store it in London until the documents are genuinely in order.
