Share & student
One room, not one household
In SE15 a house frequently changes one bedroom at a time. Somebody leaves, somebody arrives, and the other four people are at work. That is a different job from a household move and it is planned as one.
Working to a room, not a property
We come for one bedroom and everything in it. Nothing else gets touched, the communal parts are used quickly and quietly, and the kitchen table stays where it is because it belongs to somebody who is not moving.
Practically, that means arriving with a plan of what is going and what is staying, agreed in advance with you rather than negotiated in a hallway with three housemates watching.
The gap between rooms
Share tenancies rarely line up. You are out on a Saturday and the next room is free a fortnight later; or you have a place from the first of the month and cannot get in until the tenth.
Storage is the answer and it is the most useful thing we do for people in shares. Inventoried on the way in, delivered when the new room exists.
Students, and the summer
The end of the academic year is the busiest fortnight of our year. Halls clear, shares empty, and everybody needs a van in the same week.
Halls usually have a loading window and sometimes a booking system; send the hall name, the block and any window you have been given. If you do not know, we plan for the more restrictive case.
What to do before we arrive
- Pack what you can into boxes rather than bags — bags are what get dropped
- Strip the bed and roll the mattress cover on, if you are taking the mattress
- Label anything that must not be stacked
- Tell your housemates what time we are coming, so nobody is surprised
- Say whether the room is on the top floor, because it usually is
Who books, who is there
Frequently a parent books and a student is at the door, or the other way round. Entirely normal — just tell us who will be at each end and on which number, so the crew are not ringing a phone that is in a lecture.
A whole flat rather than a room? That is a flat move, and it is planned differently.
Worth knowing
Share and student moves, the real questions
Can you move one room without disturbing the house?
That is the whole point of the service. We work to the room rather than the property, carry through the communal parts quickly and quietly, and leave the shared spaces as we found them.
What if the next room is not ready?
Storage covers it. The room goes into store, inventoried, and comes out when the new place is available — which in a share is frequently a couple of weeks later.
Do you move students out of halls?
Yes. Halls usually have a loading window and sometimes a booking system; tell us which and we work to it. End of the academic year is the busiest fortnight of our year, so book early.
Can parents book on our behalf?
Often how it happens. Whoever books gets the quote; just tell us who will actually be at each end and on which number, so nobody is standing outside a locked door.
Is packing included?
You usually pack a room yourself and we will drop materials off beforehand if you want them. If you would rather not, we will pack it — it is a short job at this scale.
Tell us the room, the floor and the date.
Three details and we can quote a single-room move without a visit. If the date is a guess, say so — we can work with that.
